He was born in Paddington in west London in 1963. He was educated at Dulwich College Preparatory School in south-east London and at Sherborne School in Dorset. After reading theology at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, he studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
