Due to her parents' fate as refugees, she came to Hamburg at the age of two and grew up in Visselhövede. In 1963 she went to Munich. There she became a doctor's assistant in order to finance her private acting and singing lessons. Shortly afterwards, in 1964, she made her first theater appearances under the stage name "Gisela Hahn".
